Make Excuses or Make A Difference

“With all the problems in our world today, we must stop making excuses. We can make excuses or we can make a
difference, but we cannot make both. We must step in.” – Craig Groeschel

During the Global Leadership Summit each year, I feverishly record notes. I type as quickly as possible in order to capture as much content as possible. The reason is to provide a resource for others and for myself to reflect throughout the year on the content.

This morning, I revisited Craig Groeschel‘s opening session. To be honest, I entered the session with curiosity regarding how the Summit was planning to address the recent issues surrounding Bill Hybels. I found Groeschel’s comments genuine, heart-felt and inspiring. He did not skirt the issue but rather paused near the top of his talk to acknowledge and speak into the situation. He called us as leaders to be stewards of the power entrusted to us, only using it for the good of others. He told us why he was there. “Why am I here? Because we must make a difference. With all the problems in our world today, we must stop making excuses. We can make excuses or we can make a difference, but we cannot make both. We must step in.”

I find in my own leadership that it is easy to make excuses when things do not go the way they should. It’s easier to shift the focus rather than boldly lead in the midst of the problem.  Groeschel’s call to quit making excuses and to start making a difference is important. It’s one of the clear takeaways for me and my leadership in the coming year.

What did you learn from the opening session of the Global Leadership Summit? How are you applying it in your leadership? (If you missed the talk, feel free to review my notes of the talk.)
