Global Leadership Summit 2014 Session 7: Tyler Perry

  • TGLS2014_Tyler_PerryAs a child I had a lot of trauma. In trying to escape, I created a great imagination.
  • Leadership and creativity are born out of the same mind and born out of the circumstances life brought.
  • “All things work together for the good…”
  • The artist side of me needs his space. He needs to be creative and irreverent. I try to give myself enough space to create.
  • I’ll dedicate 3 or 4 months at a time to write.
  • I would walk away from people who are artists, but aren’t on time, and organized.
  • People have more respect for you when you can honor and respect other people’s time.
  • Remember who you were before you became who you are.
  • When I was growing up, I couldn’t afford to go to shows. I would wait for intermission, when the smokers came out and I’d sneak back in with them. The first few plays I wrote, people say, “This doesn’t feel complete. It’s like it just starts in the middle.”
  • Clear the noise so that I can hear from God. I get away from everybody so I can be still.
  • I want to lead people somewhere with a creative message.
  • What I try to do is surround myself with people who are like me. I was an underdog. We’re all underdogs. I will sometimes pass over the most qualified person with a bad attitude to take a chance on a lesser qualified person with the best attitude.
  • I was born into this family. My dad was a functional alcoholic. He had a great work ethic but he could be violent and angry.
  • I want to know the God that makes my mother so happy. I want to know this Jesus.
  • God doesn’t make any mistakes.
  • If it hadn’t been for her, I don’t know who or where I’d be. What she gave me is what has sustained me, which is my faith in God.
  • It takes an enormous amount of energy to get through abuse or betrayal; it takes the same amount of energy to forgive as well.
  • My anger was my fuel.
  • What is so scary about forgiveness is that you give up the hope that the situation will be any different.
  • It’s not just about making them laugh. It’s using laughter as the anesthesia to get to the subject matter.
  • I don’t want to do a movie just to do a movie. I don’t want to just make you laugh to get a laugh. I want to move you.
  • What I hope is that every generation gets better. It’s going to take time. (on racial reconciliation)
  • People are just people. We are so much alike. We all have different issues and struggles, but all the issues and struggles are the same.
  • It is a matter of opinion, or where you come from, or whether you understand it or not. (on critics)
  • Rather than focus on critics, I’d rather focus on the 12 million people on Facebook who have personal stories.
  • “God prepares a table before me…” Watch me eat.
  • I believe wholeheartedly “to whom much is given, much is required”
  • My mother had a heart for giving. I’d wake up in the morning and there would be whole families in the house.
  • I want to be able to take care of myself and people I love, but I wanted to see
  • When you feel like a number, rather than a soul, its tough.
  • I wish we could just go to church and there be no judgment. I wish people would allow more celebrities to go to church.
  • “People may forget what you said to them. People may forget what you did to them. They won’t forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou
